TELEVISION SHOWS---TIME TO DISMISS THE DUNSICAL!

Who knows, perhaps it’s a sign of my advancing age that I’ve become more introspective (hypercritical if you will) -----but I have been increasingly disenchanted with so many of the current television shows that have made it to “primetime.” It appears as if the audience actually supports the stupidification of the whacky and unrealistic story lines and plots. The dialogue is often mundane, naïve, and plain idiocy. Is this new anti-intellectualistic claptrap the new de rigueur? Shows such as “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Big Bang Theory,” and several of the so-called “reality shows” depict assorted, foolhardy, or ego driven participants to unimaginable (sometimes nauseating) heights. On the opposite of the coin are quality programs such as “The Good Wife,” “Mad Men,” “Fringe,” and “Glee,” which portray more imaginative, creative, and real life situations.

I guess quality choice television is in the eyes of the beholder. However, how can two very obese, giggling, individuals pushing a wet beach ball while rolling on a log in a pond week after week be entertaining? It was said that a habit is an ingrained choice, but maybe other alternatives can be explored. Surely the masses of television viewers might actually appreciate more creatively constructed programs that incorporate both entertainment value as well as intellectual stimulation. Before you criticize me, try watching some of my recommended shows. I know you will appreciate at least some of them.
